Top 5 Ice Fishing Jigs & Lures

There are many ice fishing lures and jigs to choose from. So how do you choose the right one? If you are a beginner there are some classic bait combinations that every avid ice angler has in their tackle box. Start with the basic baits. These are my top 5 ice fishing jigs and lures that have historically produced fish over the past decade. All of these bait combinations can be found in our Tailored Tackle Ice Fishing Kit.

1. Tungsten device with soft plastic:

Wolfram jigs are great for aiming at Bluegill. These specialty devices fish fast because they are denser and therefore heavier than lead devices, even in a smaller size. Small and fast is great for subtle jigging from Bluegill. I type this stencil with a red soft plastic made from euro larvae and some live euro larvae spikes.

2.Diamond jig with soft plastic:

A diamond template in Firetiger green is dynamite for crappie and trout, especially if it is equipped with a suitable chartreuse plastic. This neon presentation calls stray fish and attracts attention at night. The larger profile of this combination helps filter out smaller fish to focus on the trophies. I like typing it with a single living wax worm as a scent.

3. Demon Jig with Live Bait:

My go to live bait, a demon jig, is the combination of a spoon profile and a jig head. This way, you can summon fish with the conspicuousness of a spoon and at the same time present a live minnow. Jig your live bait or put it under a dead stick or tip-up. Our demon jig has a glowing bottom that calls out to fish at night while jigging or sitting still. I use full minnows to catch pikeperch and pike.

4. Curved flutter spoon:

The curved flutter spoon is a great option for calling fish in clear water. It reflects the light as it falls into the water column. Attach a snap to the end for maximum flutter effect. Instead of moving the spoon in place, raise the bait two to three feet and drop it. I like to tilt the triple hook with a minnow head to attack pikeperch and trout.

5. Jigging bait:

The jigging bait calls on large fish from afar. A Firetiger jigging lure is great for dirty water and attracts fish at night. Quickly snap the bait a foot or two up. The fins on the back of the bait let it slide in a circle after a quick click. This circular motion calls out large fish and mimics a wounded bait fish. I like to tilt the triple hook with a minnow head and the tail hook with a minnow tail. This is my favorite trout and pike bait.
