Pint-sized kitten found in a yard shows fighting spirit and is determined to thrive

A kitten was brought back from the sidelines after being found as a tiny newborn in a garden.

A good Samaritan woman from Las Vegas discovered a newborn kitten in her front yard. A few meters away she found her siblings who unfortunately couldn’t. The mother cat was nowhere to be found, and the sole survivor needed critical care.

Nikki Martinez, a Las Vegas-based rescuer and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) nurse, immediately offered to take her away. She and her husband (Foster Papi) have spent the past decade rescuing and helping cats and kittens in need. At the time, Nikki’s husband was diagnosed with cancer, but the couple didn’t hesitate to help.

“She was tiny and frail and we didn’t know what her future would be, but we were determined to give her a chance to fight,” shared Nikki with Love Meow.

They named the kitten Rocky, and the little girl made it through her first night in an incubator with a full stomach. The couple worked as a team to feed the kitten around the clock and make sure it was warm and loved.

Nikki got up every two hours at night to tend the kitten for the first week. Rocky got an insatiable appetite and was catching up in size.

Foster Papi helped her bottle feed her whenever he could, and Rocky always put a smile on his face.

At the age of 24, Rocky proudly completed her nest and moved into a mini playpen, where she was allowed to train her leg muscles. The tiny bundle of lint was intrigued by all of the new toys and tried to catch them all, although it was still a little wobbly.

She loved being pampered like a little princess and asked for snacks (bottles) all day long. She kept her foster mother busy and provided much-needed comfort when Foster Papi underwent life-saving surgery that was a huge success.

After Foster Papi was released from the hospital, he couldn’t wait to see his little pride and joy and insisted on resuming some of the nursing duties. He gave Rocky a bottle and she gulped the food happily. It was a wonderful moment of two amazing fighters cheering on each other.

At five weeks, Rocky evolved into an independent little kitten. She discovered her inner ass and wasn’t shy about showing off her kattitude. As she got more playful and wild, she started creating all kinds of antics.

Rocky loves to play with Foster Papi and will follow him around the house chasing his feet. She will sit next to him to offer a purr and encouragement, as if to help him heal.

It took Rocky a little longer to learn to eat on her own as she was enjoying bottle time with her foster parents. When she finally decided to eat like a big kitten, Nikki and her husband were so proud.

Since then, Rocky has been all about playtime and improving her feline skills.

When it’s time for Rocky to spread her wings and fly, they want to find her the perfect forever home that she and her diva attitude will appreciate.

“She is very different from any bottle baby I’ve ever had. She is extremely independent,” shared Nikki Love Meow. “She was the only survivor of her litter. She is precious and a true gift to my husband and me as we navigated through his cancer diagnosis and treatment.”

After a few weeks of looking for the right home, Rocky made her dream come true. She will move in with her eternal family next week.

“TNR and care are our passions. The ability to care for kittens in need has been our joy for the past 10 years. For every day that we have health and strength, we will continue this work.”
