Introducing: The Biewer Terrier: The 197th AKC recognized breed

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, each as adorable and unique as the other. As for the official “dog breeds”, however, the AKC will recognize 197 starting this year. The newest dog to become an official AKC breed is the Biewer Terrier (pronounced “Beaver”).

It took a long journey for the Biewer Terrier to receive this title. Here is everything you need to know about these adorable little fluff balls.

Properties and characteristics

These small dogs, weighing just 4 to 8 pounds, certainly belong to the Toy Group. Myrna Torres, one of the co-founders of the breed in the United States, describes them as:

“A long-haired, tri-colored dog with a soft, silky coat and a feathery tail that curls down its back. Add to this a neat ponytail on top of your head and a proud, sassy walk. “

Gayle Pruett, the other co-founder and vice president of the Biewer Terrier Club of America, says:

“It’s very adaptable and loves both the snow and the beach and can compete with the best hikers. They do just as well on the farm as they do in a house or apartment. “

It’s no surprise these tiny terriers have goofy diva personalities. They love to play and they love attention.

“They devote themselves to their owners with a bizarre, childlike behavior. Half of my dogs are smiling and wearing toys all the time. When excited, they run zoomies all over the house. “

According to Pruett, the only known health problem for the breed is a sensitive gastrointestinal system that can be controlled with proper diet.

The story of the Biewer Terrier before AKC recognition

Similar to its Yorkie inspiration, the Biewer Terrier got its name from the late Werner and Gertrud Biewer. They were Yorkshire Terrier breeders in Germany who started producing tricolor Yorkies in the 1980s.

It wasn’t until 2007 that Mars Veterinary geneticists established that the Biewer Terrier is a bonafide breed. This made these terriers the first breed in history to be recognized as a purebred dog based on a genetic study.

The Biewer Terrier breed stems from the dominant traits of four other dogs: the Yorkshire Terrier, the Maltese, and the Havanese / Bichon Frize.

What defines an AKC-recognized “breed”?

If you’re wondering what makes a breed a “breed” rather than just another type of dog, the AKC website explains:

“The easiest way to define a race is to say that they are always ‘race true’. That is, if one purebred Irish setter is bred to another purebred Irish setter, dogs will always result that are immediately recognizable as Irish setters. “

A “breed standard” document describes the ideal physical characteristics, movements and temperament of the breed.

“The AKC standard for each breed comes from a ‘parent club’, the AKC-recognized national club dedicated to a particular breed. Once approved by the AKC, a standard will become both the breeder’s blueprint and the tool that dog show judges use to evaluate a breeder’s work. “

If you are looking to adopt a Biewer Terrier, you may need to spend a little more money. But be warned: Purebred dogs are often the focus of puppy fraud. Make sure to check your source of adoption with the official Biewer Terrier Club.
