The Chihuahua may be the smallest of all dog breeds, but these tiny waggers have a big place in the hearts of dog lovers! The compact canines are so popular with their admirers that they are celebrated with their own pet holiday – International Chihuahua Recognition Daythat is being held May 14th!

The name of the breed was inspired by the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

A tiny Chihuahua named Millie is 3.8 inches tall and holds the Guinness Book of Records title as the world’s smallest dog!

In 2013, a 6.26-inch, long-haired Chihuahua named Cupcake was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest service dog!

The Chihuahua Club of America was founded in 1923.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Chihuahua ranks 34th among the most popular dog breeds.

Charlotte – Charlotte, a long-haired Chihuahua with her own Instagram account, starred with actor Paul Mescal (Normal People) in the music video for Phoebe Bridgers’ melody “Savior Complex”, which was staged by Golden Globe winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge .

Gidget – As the mascot of the popular restaurant chain, America had this gender-specific Chihuahua say “Yo quiero Taco Bell” in the late 1990s. Gidget portrayed Bruiser Woods’ mother in Legal Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde.

Reindeer – The insane dog from the animated duo Ren and Stimpy.

Ruscoe – Ruscoe was discovered at a Los Angeles animal shelter and portrayed Papi, a rover with a romantic heart, in the hit Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Tinker Bell – Tinkerbell (aka Tinks), the Chihuahua whose cuteness caused a little dog fever among Glitterati in the early 2000s, starred in the reality series The Simple Life with her famous mother Paris Hilton.
